Ripley is a village in Surrey, in the borough of Guildford, on the old London to Portsmouth road, with a wide High Street and a large village green. This page brings together official information about the area for anyone thinking of buying or selling a home in Ripley.
Property in Ripley
Ripley addresses use the GU23 postcode district, which Send also shares. The local authority is Guildford Borough Council.
The council’s Ripley Conservation Area Appraisal, approved in July 2017, describes a historic village that grew at a junction of medieval routes and expanded as a coaching stop on the London to Portsmouth road after the 1749 Turnpike Act. It describes a gently curving High Street with wide grass verges and street trees, mostly two-storey buildings, and surviving 15th to 17th-century timber-framed buildings, 18th-century Georgian brick houses and 19th-century cottages, many with Welsh slate roofs. The village sits among water meadows along the River Wey, with the A3 to the south.
The Lovelace Neighbourhood Plan, adopted in May 2021, covers Ripley, Ockham and Wisley. It says Ripley had about 910 homes in 2016 and roughly 2,000 residents, that the conservation area holds most of the plan area’s listed buildings (57 of them Grade II and one Grade I), and that the 2019 Local Plan took the village out of the Green Belt while the surrounding countryside remains Green Belt. These documents date from 2017 and 2021, so they show the area’s character rather than today’s market.
House prices in Ripley
The UK House Price Index, produced by the Office for National Statistics with HM Land Registry data, publishes figures by local authority rather than for Ripley alone. For July 2026, the latest month available, the average price in Guildford was £533,000. That is 2.2% lower than the £545,000 recorded for July 2025. These are Guildford-wide figures, and estimates for the most recent months are provisional and may be revised.
By type of home, the July 2026 averages for Guildford were:
- Detached: £957,000
- Semi-detached: £525,000
- Terraced: £431,000
- Flats and maisonettes: £269,000
An average across a whole borough cannot tell you what a particular home in Ripley is worth. Figures for each type of home rest on fewer sales, so they can move sharply from month to month. For individual sales, HM Land Registry’s Price Paid Data records residential property sales in England and Wales that have been submitted for registration, so the very latest sales may not yet be included.
Getting around
Ripley has no railway station. The Lovelace Neighbourhood Plan says its residents mostly drive to stations, with Woking the most popular, followed by West Byfleet, Horsley and Effingham Junction. Please check National Rail for destinations, journey times and car parking at the station you choose.
By road, the A3 London to Portsmouth road runs through the area, and the conservation area appraisal says it bypassed the village in 1976. The neighbourhood plan places the A3’s junction with the M25, junction 10, the Wisley interchange, in or near the area.
Things to know
- Ripley Green is described as more than 65 acres in the council’s appraisal and about 67 acres in the neighbourhood plan. The appraisal says it is owned by Surrey County Council and managed day to day by the parish council, and the plan describes it as common land and a Site of Nature Conservation Importance used for cricket and football.
- Newark Priory is a scheduled monument in the parish of Ripley. Historic England describes a 12th-century Augustinian priory, dissolved in 1538, whose standing remains are separately listed Grade I.
- Surrey County Council describes Papercourt Lake as a 45-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest, and Papercourt Lock on the Wey Navigation as dating from the 1780s. It says the National Trust has managed the Wey Navigation since 1964.
- The neighbourhood plan gives about 135 hectares for Ockham Common and 142 hectares for Wisley Common. Both are heathland in the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area, Ockham Common is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve, and Surrey Wildlife Trust manages both.
