Property in East Sheen
East Sheen addresses use the SW14 postcode district, which it shares with Mortlake. The local authority is the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
The council’s statement for the Sheen Lane (East Sheen) conservation area, designated on 12 November 2002, says the area lies north of the East Sheen Gate of Richmond Park. It records that suburban building began in 1896 with the sale of the Palewell Estate and continued until about 1914, paused during the First World War and ended around 1935, and that most of Sheen Gate Gardens dates from 1901 to 1905.
The statement describes mainly detached and semi-detached houses built between 1900 and 1935, in red and brown brick, white painted render and red plain tiles, with mature trees and high stock-brick boundary walls surviving from former estates. It names The Coach House, 228 Sheen Lane and the Red House among its Buildings of Townscape Merit. The statement describes the area’s character rather than today’s market.
House prices in East Sheen
The UK House Price Index, produced by the Office for National Statistics with HM Land Registry data, publishes figures by local authority rather than for East Sheen alone. For July 2026, the latest month available, the average price in Richmond upon Thames was £803,000. That is 0.8% lower than the £810,000 recorded for July 2025. These are Richmond-wide figures, and estimates for the most recent months are provisional and may be revised.
By type of home, the July 2026 averages for Richmond upon Thames were:
- Detached: £1,815,000
- Semi-detached: £1,192,000
- Terraced: £916,000
- Flats and maisonettes: £487,000
An average across a whole borough cannot tell you what a particular home in East Sheen is worth. Figures for each type of home rest on fewer sales, so they can move sharply from month to month. For individual sales, HM Land Registry’s Price Paid Data records residential property sales in England and Wales that have been submitted for registration, so the very latest sales may not yet be included.
Getting around
Mortlake station, at the northern end of Sheen Lane (SW14 8LN), is the main-line station closest to the centre of East Sheen. It is served by South Western Railway in fare zone 3. South Western Railway lists a car park of 9 spaces and 132 sheltered cycle spaces with CCTV, and National Rail says 4 of the car park spaces are accessible. Both list step-free access to both platforms. Journey times vary by service and time of day, so please check National Rail or South Western Railway for the train you want.
